Gary Boughen

Gary Boughen

Gary Boughen spent 20 years in commercial media in four Australian states. His early career big break came at rural Queensland stations in Longreach and Mt Isa as one of the “Good Guys” on the “Color Radio” Network and later included more than 5 years during the 70s at 4GG on the Gold Coast, followed by a decade in Adelaide radio.

Whilst there he also hosted a contemporary music TV show which aired in Adelaide and Perth from the early 80s with constant high ratings and which regularly, convincingly beat its main rival at that time, the ABC’s Countdown. Gary had a hand in breaking many new performers’ music across Australia and interviewed numerous local and touring recording artists along the way. In 1990 his career travels took him to Hobart and a part in the launch of commercial FM in that city which proved a very successful when the new station very nearly toppled the market leader after just 11 weeks on air.

Since leaving full time media work 20 years ago, Gary has dabbled occasionally in on-air work and voice-overs. He inherited a strong appreciation of the jazz genres from his father, a successful Brisbane electronics businessman. Today Gary runs the family company and finds the opportunity to be back on air Saturday mornings from 9 on Jazz Radio an excellent break from the weekly demands of business.
